Worldwide Age Representation in Parliaments Dataset

Download WARP Dataset

The WARP dataset is free to download. The codebook describes the different variables and how the data was compiled and aggregated. The dataset is structured on country-years and has information on country codes in the file to enable seamless merging to other datasets.

Variables included in the database:

Country A string variable of the country name we collected the data for.
Country Code A string variable of the 3-digit country code of the country we collected the data for.
Date A date variable indicating the year of data-collection; this normally corresponds with an election year.
Number of MPs The number of MPs in the Lower House of the respective country.
Percent female MPs The percentage of female MPs in the Lower House of the respective country.
Mean age The mean age of MPs in the respective country.
Median age The median age of MPs in the respective country.
Percent MPs aged 30 or under The percentage of MPs aged 30 or under.
Percent MPs aged 35 or under The percentage of MPs aged 35 or under.
Percent MPs aged 40 or under The percentage of MPs aged 40 or under.
Percent MPs aged 41 to 60 The percentage of MPs aged 41 to 60.
Percent MPs aged 61 or over The percentage of MPs aged 61 or over.
Percent female MPs aged 30 or under The percentage of female MPs aged 30 or under of all female MPs.
Percent female MPs aged 35 or under The percentage of female MPs aged 35 or under of all female MPs.
Percent female MPs aged 40 or under The percentage of female MPs aged 40 or under of all female MPs.
Percent female MPs aged 41 to 60 The percentage of female MPs aged 41 to 60 of all female MPs.
Percent female MPs aged 61 or over The percentage of female MPs aged 61 or over of all female MPs.
Age Representation Index 30 or under (ARI 30) The percentage of MPs aged 30 or under relative to the percent of citizens aged 30 or under in the population.
Age Representation Index 35 or under (ARI 35) The percentage of MPs aged 35 or under relative to the percent of citizens aged 35 or under in the population.
Age Representation Index 40 or under (ARI 40) The percentage of MPs aged 40 or under relative to the percent of citizens aged 40 or under in the population.
Age Representation Index 41 to 60 (ARI 41 to 60) The percentage of MPs aged 41 to 60 relative to the percent of citizens aged 41 to 60 in the population.
Age Representation Index 61 or over (ARI 61 plus) The percentage of MPs aged 61 or over relative to the percent of citizens aged 61 or over in the population.
Coverage MPs The percentage of MPs we could collect data for.
Coverage Age The percentage of MPs we could collect data for on age.
Coverage Gender The percentage of MPs we could collect data for on gender.

Sources: the data for these database stems from the website EveryPolitician, a webscrabed compilation on individual information on MPs and data from the parliaments themselves. For the parliamentary data we either found these data on the parliamentary website or we received these information per email from the national parliamentary officer.
